Lockheed and SLB break out while natural gas melts down

Strong earnings in defense and energy kept the bulls fed, but a sudden collapse in natural gas and a late-week crypto reversal proved that volatility is still lurking under the surface.

Earnings lift the heavyweights

The week belonged to the old-school heavyweights, as blowout earnings in defense and energy offset a brutal collapse in natural gas and a sharp reversal in crypto. While early-week momentum hinted at a broad speculative frenzy driven by aggressive New York session volume, the reality by Friday was a market picking its winners carefully. Traders who chased the initial breakout in digital assets found themselves trapped, leaving us to dig the real gems out of the traditional sectors.

The mood shifted from purely risk-on to mixed as the week wore on, finishing with a risk dial reading of 64. Market breadth leaned noticeably negative, with 113 assets falling against just 75 rising, but the sheer size of the moves in key sectors kept the headline indices relatively insulated. It was a week where stock-specific volatility completely overshadowed the broader macroeconomic picture, leaving investors to navigate a landscape of extreme winners and punishing losers.

Defense, energy, and a crypto crash

Defense and energy stocks were the undisputed stars of the week, driven by a wave of institutional capital reacting to pristine corporate earnings. Lockheed Martin soared 9.4% to a new 120-day high after raising its annual forecast and reporting a record backlog in its third-quarter earnings. The momentum spilled into the energy sector, where SLB jumped 7.2% following its own earnings beat, driven by an accelerating international deepwater recovery and unexpected demand from artificial intelligence data centers. Traditional oil majors followed suit, with Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Occidental Petroleum all closing at fresh highs as the sector demonstrated clear breakout momentum.

While energy equities thrived, the underlying commodities told a drastically different story. Natural Gas suffered a massive 15.3% breakdown, marking its worst week in months by its own standards. Forecasts for unseasonably warm weather across the eastern United States pushed back expectations for winter heating demand, triggering a wave of selling that left the commodity pinned at the bottom of the board. The sharp drop during the New York session suggested a significant shift in sentiment, completely decoupling the commodity from the strength seen in energy producers.

The speculative end of the market suffered a severe whiplash, punishing traders who arrived late to the party. Early in the week, Asian and New York sessions saw aggressive bidding in digital assets, but the rally collapsed spectacularly as the week progressed. Filecoin plummeted 17.1%, Optimism dropped 16.4%, and Aptos shed 13.2%. The broad Crypto class finished as the worst-performing group, losing an average of 5.4% and proving that the early-week risk-on surge was built on fragile foundations.

In the tech and aerospace sectors, investors were ruthless with their capital allocation, demanding perfection from corporate reports. Cloud and cybersecurity names caught a strong bid, with CrowdStrike surging 13.3% and Adobe adding 7.6%. Conversely, GE Aerospace suffered a highly unusual 9.0% drop. Despite reporting strong earnings, raising guidance, and boasting a massive commercial services backlog, the stock experienced a 3.3-sigma sell-off. It hit a new 120-day low as investors aggressively took profits, highlighting the unforgiving nature of current market valuations.

A Thursday shock in the bond market

Thursday delivered a seismic shock to the rates market, catching many traders off guard. Yields on the US 5-Year Treasury Yield and the US 10-Year Treasury Yield plummeted in daily moves exceeding four standard deviations of their normal volatility, contributing to weekly declines of 9 and 11 basis points respectively. The sudden plunge in yields coincided with a massive single-day spike for Lockheed Martin and a sharp 12.9-sigma anomaly in the US Dollar / Hong Kong Dollar pair, marking the most chaotic session of the week. The sheer velocity of the bond market rally suggests that institutional players were caught offside and forced to aggressively cover their positions.

Catching the aerospace fade

The Alpha Brief had a strong read on the week's turbulence, most notably spotting a short setup on AST SpaceMobile during the London session. The desk also successfully called a short on the KOSPI and rode the long side of the Lockheed Martin breakout, proving the value of session-specific tactical positioning.

Speculators pile into the gas trade

Speculators are heavily crowded into a bearish bet on Natural Gas, according to Tuesday's futures positioning snapshot. The net short position swelled by 7,694 contracts to reach -241,272, placing it at the absolute 0th percentile of its historical range. With the trade this lopsided and the market heavily reliant on mild weather forecasts, any sudden shift in meteorological models next week could trigger a violent short squeeze, forcing latecomers to cover at a steep premium.

Central banks step to the mic

Next week shifts the focus squarely onto central banks and inflation data, testing the resilience of the foreign exchange market. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand will announce its Official Cash Rate, with forecasts pointing to a hike to 3.00% from 2.75%. This will be a critical test for the New Zealand Dollar, which managed a solid 1.1% gain this week despite the broader market's mixed tone.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Canada will release its Overnight Rate and Monetary Policy Report, expected to show a hike to 2.50% from 2.25%. With the US Dollar / Canadian Dollar pair having just suffered an unusual 1.3% drop, traders will be watching closely to see if the central bank's tone accelerates the loonie's momentum or stops it in its tracks. A hawkish surprise from either bank could easily spark the next major trend in the currency space.
