About US Core PCE Price Index

The personal consumption expenditures price index comes from the Bureau of Economic Analysis as part of the Personal Income and Outlays report. Where CPI prices what households pay for out of pocket, PCE covers all consumption made on their behalf, including medical care paid by employers and government programmes. Its weights also update continuously as spending shifts, so it captures people substituting away from goods that have become expensive. The core version excludes food and energy.

The Federal Open Market Committee defines its inflation objective in PCE terms, which gives this release a unique standing even though it rarely surprises. Most of its inputs are already known from CPI, PPI and import prices published earlier in the month, and forecasters use them to estimate core PCE to two decimal places. Market reactions are therefore often muted unless the print lands outside that consensus or the previous months are revised materially.

Revisions are common and can be meaningful. Each monthly report restates earlier months, and annual updates of the national accounts, usually each autumn, can reshape the series over several years. Some components, such as portfolio-management fees, move with stock prices, and imputed financial services add a volatility that CPI does not have.

The same report carries personal income, consumer spending and the saving rate, which feed directly into estimates of quarterly GDP. Readers who want a sense of the breadth of price pressure also follow the Dallas Fed's trimmed-mean PCE, which is calculated from the same data.
