About Euro / US Dollar

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

EUR/USD prices one euro in US dollars. It pairs the currencies of the two largest developed economies and is, by turnover, the single busiest exchange rate on the planet, which is why it usually carries the tightest spreads of any currency pair. A rising quote means the euro is strengthening against the dollar; a falling one means the dollar is gaining. Quotes run to five decimal places, with the fourth decimal treated as the conventional “pip”.

What drives it

At its core the pair is a contest between two central banks: the European Central Bank in Frankfurt and the US Federal Reserve. Expectations for the gap between euro-area and US interest rates tend to matter more than the level of either. Beyond policy, the pair reacts to growth and inflation data on both sides of the Atlantic — US payrolls and CPI, euro-area flash PMIs and HICP inflation — and to the energy balance of Europe, which imports much of its oil and gas and so sees its terms of trade worsen when energy prices spike. Political stress inside the euro area, such as sovereign bond spreads widening between member states, has historically weighed on the single currency.

How it trades through the day

The Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) is typically the quietest stretch, with narrow ranges unless a major headline lands. Activity picks up sharply at the London open (07:00–13:00 UTC), when European data is released and the largest dealing desks come online. The overlap with the start of New York (13:00–22:00 UTC) usually brings the day’s deepest liquidity, and scheduled US releases at 12:30 or 13:30 UTC, depending on daylight saving, are frequent sources of sharp moves. Volume thins steadily through the New York afternoon.

What it tends to move with

Because the euro makes up well over half of the US Dollar Index basket, EUR/USD tends to move almost as a mirror image of the dollar index. It has historically moved in the same direction as GBP/USD and in the opposite direction to USD/CHF, reflecting the close economic ties between the euro area, the UK and Switzerland. Those relationships are strong on average but loosen when news is specific to one economy.
