About British Pound / US Dollar
Revised 2026-09-30What it is
GBP/USD states the price of one pound sterling in US dollars. Its nickname, “cable”, dates from the nineteenth century, when the exchange rate was transmitted between London and New York over a transatlantic telegraph cable. Sterling is among the oldest currencies still in use, and the pair consistently ranks among the three or four most traded worldwide. It is quoted to five decimal places.
What drives it
The Bank of England’s rate decisions and the minutes and vote splits of its Monetary Policy Committee are the most direct domestic influence. Because the UK has at times run persistent inflation above target, the pound has often reacted strongly to monthly CPI and wage-growth figures. The UK’s current-account deficit means sterling depends on continued foreign capital inflows, which can make it sensitive to shifts in confidence — fiscal announcements and gilt market stress have produced some of its sharpest historical moves. On the other side, anything that moves the dollar broadly, from Federal Reserve guidance to US jobs data, passes straight through. Politics carries unusual weight for a G10 currency: the 2016 EU referendum remains the defining example of a single event repricing the pound.
How it trades through the day
Cable is typically subdued during Asia (22:00–07:00 UTC). The London block (07:00–13:00 UTC) is its home session: UK data is normally released at 06:00 or 07:00 UTC, and much of the day’s range is often set in the first few hours. When New York (13:00–22:00 UTC) opens, US data can reverse or extend the London move, and liquidity stays good through the overlap before tapering in the late US afternoon.
What it tends to move with
GBP/USD has historically moved in the same direction as EUR/USD most of the time, and both tend to move inversely to the US Dollar Index. When the two diverge, the gap shows up in EUR/GBP. The pound has also shown some sensitivity to the FTSE 100, though the relationship is inconsistent because many FTSE companies earn their revenue in dollars.
