US Retail Sales

The advance monthly retail trade report estimates sales by stores, online sellers, petrol stations and food-service businesses across the United States. It is compiled by the Census Bureau from a sample of several thousand firms and published about two weeks after the month ends, which makes it one of the earliest hard data points on household demand. Figures are in current dollars and adjusted for seasonal and trading-day differences, but not for inflation.

That last point shapes how the number is read. A strong nominal gain during a period of rising prices may reflect higher costs rather than more goods bought, so analysts set it against CPI released days earlier. The calendar feed also lists a core measure excluding autos; many economists go further and follow the 'control group', which drops autos, fuel, building materials and restaurants and feeds directly into the GDP estimate of goods consumption. A control-group surprise has historically tended to move Treasury yields and the dollar more than the headline.

Revisions are frequent and occasionally large: the prior two months are updated each release, and an annual benchmark realigns the series with a fuller survey. Petrol prices can swing the headline, and car sales, which are lumpy, can dominate a single month.

Services spending beyond restaurants is largely absent, so the report captures only part of consumption. Card-spending trackers, the University of Michigan survey and the monthly personal spending data from the BEA help complete the picture.
