Indices summarise a market in one number, and their 24-hour moves are the clearest single read of risk appetite on the board. Cash indices only trade in their home exchange's hours, so outside them a figure is the last close and is labelled that way. The VIX and the Dollar Index are included because they are read alongside equities rather than as equities: a rising VIX usually accompanies a falling S&P 500.
