The US equity benchmarks differ in what they measure. The S&P 500 is a broad, capitalisation-weighted measure of large US companies; the Nasdaq 100 is concentrated in technology and communication firms; the Dow Jones is a price-weighted average of thirty blue chips; and the Russell 2000 tracks smaller companies that are more exposed to the domestic economy. The VIX, derived from S&P 500 option prices, measures the volatility the options market expects over the next month and typically rises when equities fall. The US Dollar Index tracks the dollar against a fixed basket weighted towards the euro. Cash indices trade during the New York Stock Exchange's regular hours. Outside those hours the figure shown is the last close, labelled as such, while index futures continue trading almost around the clock.
