Europe's national benchmarks have very different characters. The FTSE 100 leans heavily on energy, mining, banking and consumer-staples companies that earn much of their revenue abroad, so it often moves inversely to sterling. The DAX 40 is weighted towards industrial and export-oriented German companies; the SMI is dominated by a few large Swiss healthcare and consumer names. The Euro Stoxx 50 draws the largest companies from across the euro area into one benchmark and is the region's most widely traded equity index. European cash markets trade during the London block of the day and overlap the start of the US session. That overlap is often where the largest moves in these indices happen, as US data releases and the New York open arrive before Europe closes.
