About US Dollar / Japanese Yen

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

USD/JPY shows how many yen one US dollar buys. Unlike most majors, the dollar is the base currency here, so a higher number means a stronger dollar and a weaker yen. The pair is quoted to three decimal places, with the second decimal serving as the pip. It is the second most traded currency pair globally and the main channel through which international investors hold or hedge exposure to Japanese assets.

What drives it

Few pairs are as tightly bound to bond markets. USD/JPY has a long record of tracking the spread between US Treasury yields and Japanese government bond yields: when US yields rise relative to Japan’s, the dollar has usually gained against the yen. The Bank of Japan’s policy stance, including any yield-curve management and its gradual moves away from ultra-loose settings, is therefore a central driver. The yen is also a traditional funding currency for the carry trade — borrowing cheaply in yen to invest in higher-yielding assets — so sudden unwinds of those positions can produce abrupt yen strength. Japan’s Ministry of Finance has a history of intervening, or warning that it may, when yen weakness becomes disorderly, and those warnings alone can move the pair.

How it trades through the day

This is one of the few majors where the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) genuinely matters. Tokyo’s morning brings Japanese data releases, the daily fixing used by corporate importers and exporters, and any comment from Japanese officials. London (07:00–13:00 UTC) adds European flow, but the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) is where US data and Treasury yield moves typically set the direction.

What it tends to move with

USD/JPY tends to rise with US Treasury yields and with the US Dollar Index. In risk-off episodes it has historically fallen alongside equity indices such as the Nikkei 225 and S&P 500, as investors repatriate funds and close carry positions. It usually moves in the same direction as the yen crosses, EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY, though those carry extra European influences of their own.
