About US Dollar / Canadian Dollar

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

USD/CAD quotes how many Canadian dollars are needed to buy one US dollar. The market nickname for the Canadian currency is the “loonie”, after the bird on its one-dollar coin. Because the US dollar is the base, a rising rate signals a weaker Canadian dollar. The pair connects two economies with one of the largest bilateral trading relationships anywhere, and it is quoted to five decimal places.

What drives it

Oil is the obvious starting point. Canada is one of the world’s largest crude producers, with the bulk of its exports flowing south to the United States, so higher oil prices have historically supported the loonie and pushed USD/CAD lower. That link is real but inconsistent; it has weakened in some years as the structure of Canadian exports and pipeline capacity changed. The Bank of Canada’s policy decisions, and how far they diverge from the Federal Reserve’s, are the other main pillar. Because the two economies are so interlinked, US trade policy — tariffs, and negotiations over the North American trade agreement — can move the pair sharply. Canadian employment figures are notable for often being released on the same morning as US payrolls, producing two shocks at once.

How it trades through the day

Very little happens in the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC); neither economy’s data is published then. London (07:00–13:00 UTC) brings modest activity, often tracking the broad dollar and Brent. The pair comes alive in New York (13:00–22:00 UTC), when Canadian and US figures are released at 12:30 or 13:30 UTC and oil futures trade most actively. Weekly US crude inventory reports in the New York mid-morning can also register.

What it tends to move with

USD/CAD has historically moved inversely to WTI crude and Brent crude, and in the same direction as the US Dollar Index. It tends to fall when global risk appetite improves, alongside rises in the S&P 500, though far less dramatically than commodity currencies such as AUD/USD.
