About British Pound / Japanese Yen

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

Traders nicknamed GBP/JPY “the dragon” or “the beast” for a reason: it routinely covers more ground in a day than almost any other liquid cross. It prices one pound sterling in yen and is derived from GBP/USD and USD/JPY, which means it compounds the volatility of two already active markets. Quotes run to three decimals.

What drives it

The pair joins a currency that has historically offered relatively high yields among the G10, sterling, with one that has usually offered among the lowest, the yen. That gap has made it a favoured carry position, and carry trades tend to build slowly and unwind violently. When global risk appetite sours, positions funded in yen are closed and GBP/JPY can drop sharply over a few sessions. UK-specific shocks — Bank of England surprises, fiscal events, gilt market stress, elections — reach the cross through the sterling leg, while Bank of Japan policy shifts and official warnings about yen weakness act through the other. Because neither currency is the dollar, US news matters mainly insofar as it changes global risk appetite or Treasury yields.

How it trades through the day

Tokyo’s hours in the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) set early direction via yen flows, but ranges tend to widen markedly once London opens (07:00–13:00 UTC) and UK data is released. Much of the day’s movement has historically occurred in the London morning. The New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) can extend a move if US equities and yields move decisively, then activity fades into the Asian handover.

What it tends to move with

GBP/JPY tends to move with EUR/JPY and USD/JPY, and has historically tracked global equity sentiment, falling when the VIX spikes. It shares the pound’s leg with GBP/USD, so a strong move in cable often shows up here in amplified form. Compared with EUR/JPY, its swings are usually larger in both directions.
