About Oracle

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Oracle built its business on the relational database, which still runs core systems at a large share of the world’s big companies, and much of its profit comes from support contracts renewed year after year on licences bought long ago. It also sells enterprise applications, including financial, human-resources and supply-chain software, and owns a healthcare records business that came with its acquisition of Cerner. The fastest-growing part is Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, which rents computing capacity, increasingly to AI developers that need large clusters of accelerators. Its co-founder remains its largest shareholder.

What drives it

The infrastructure business has turned a slow-growing software company into a capital-intensive one. Oracle has signed multi-year contracts to provide computing capacity on a very large scale, and its remaining performance obligations, the contracted revenue not yet recognised, have become the figure investors scrutinise first. The question is whether that backlog converts on schedule, which depends on building data centres, securing power and obtaining accelerators fast enough. Funding is the second issue. The build-out costs far more than operations generate, so it leans on borrowing and leasing, on top of debt carried from earlier acquisitions; credit conditions therefore bear on the shares in a way they do not for cash-rich cloud peers. A concentrated list of very large AI customers adds risk. Underneath, the database and applications franchise provides a slower but dependable base, with existing customers migrating to cloud subscriptions.

How it trades through the day

Trading is concentrated in the New York block, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter. Oracle’s fiscal year ends in May, so it reports in March, June, September and December, outside the main clusters, and its after-hours reaction is one of the few fresh datapoints on AI infrastructure demand in those weeks. That timing, together with the size of the contracts involved, has produced results-day moves unusually large for a company of its age.

What it tends to move with

It has increasingly traded with the AI infrastructure group, meaning the accelerator suppliers, the other cloud providers and the data-centre power and construction names, rather than with enterprise software, where its older peers are SAP and Microsoft’s business applications. Its debt has at times been watched as a gauge of how markets view borrowing to fund AI build-outs.

ORCL: questions

What is the price of Oracle today?

ORCL was quoted at $126.16 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, up 0.49% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is ORCL?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 3.53% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move ORCL makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in ORCL unusual?

Today's move is +0.1σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is an entirely ordinary session. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does ORCL move with?

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with NDX, at a correlation of +0.69. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.

When does ORCL move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 74% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is Oracle?

Oracle sells database software, enterprise applications and cloud infrastructure, and has become one of the most heavily committed builders of AI computing capacity.
