About US Dollar / Mexican Peso

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

USD/MXN states how many Mexican pesos one US dollar buys. The peso is the most actively traded emerging-market currency in Latin America and one of the most liquid in the emerging world, partly because it trades around the clock and is often used by investors as a proxy hedge for broader emerging-market risk. A higher rate means a stronger dollar and a weaker peso. It is quoted to four decimal places and typically moves more in percentage terms than the G10 majors.

What drives it

Mexico’s close economic integration with the United States shapes everything about the pair. The US is by far Mexico’s largest export market, so US growth, manufacturing demand and the terms of the North American trade agreement matter directly; tariff threats have historically produced sharp peso sell-offs. Banco de México has often kept interest rates well above those in the US, which makes the peso attractive for carry trades — borrowing in low-yielding currencies to hold higher-yielding pesos. That carry appeal means the currency tends to strengthen in calm markets and weaken abruptly when global volatility rises and positions are unwound. Remittances from Mexican workers in the US, nearshoring of manufacturing, oil revenues through the state producer Pemex and domestic politics, including judicial and energy reforms, are further influences.

How it trades through the day

Trading continues through the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC), but liquidity is thin, spreads are wider and sudden gaps are more likely. London (07:00–13:00 UTC) brings more activity as global emerging-market desks open. The New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) — which covers Mexico City’s working day — is when Mexican data, Banxico decisions and US releases arrive and volume is deepest.

What it tends to move with

USD/MXN has historically moved in the same direction as the VIX and against the S&P 500, reflecting the peso’s role as a risk barometer. It tends to rise alongside the US Dollar Index, though peso-specific carry dynamics can make it diverge, and it has shown a loose tendency to fall when WTI crude strengthens.
