About Bitcoin
Revised 2026-09-30What it is
Bitcoin was launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that needs no central bank or intermediary. Transactions are recorded on a public blockchain secured by proof-of-work mining, in which computers compete to add blocks and earn newly issued coins. The protocol caps total supply at 21 million bitcoin, and the rate of new issuance halves roughly every four years. BTC-USD is the price of one bitcoin in US dollars, aggregated from spot exchange trading.
What drives it
Bitcoin produces no cash flow, so its price rests on adoption, scarcity and sentiment. The four-yearly halving cycle has historically been a focal point for market narratives. Global liquidity conditions matter a great deal: bitcoin has tended to do better when interest rates are falling and money is plentiful, and worse when financial conditions tighten. Institutional access has grown through regulated futures and spot exchange-traded funds, and fund flows into those products are closely watched. Regulation — approvals, enforcement actions and tax treatment in major jurisdictions — can move the price sharply, as can exchange failures and hacks. Leverage in perpetual futures markets amplifies moves in both directions, with forced liquidations often producing sudden cascades.
How it trades through the day
Bitcoin trades 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no official close. Activity still clusters. The Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) carries flows from exchanges in Asia and has historically hosted some sharp overnight moves in thin liquidity. London (07:00–13:00 UTC) brings European participation, and volume usually rises further in the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC), when US spot ETFs trade and US economic data and equity markets are open. Weekends are generally quieter, with thinner order books.
What it tends to move with
In recent years bitcoin has tended to move in the same direction as technology stocks, particularly the Nasdaq 100, and against the US Dollar Index, though these relationships have been unstable. It usually leads the broader crypto market, with Ethereum and Solana tending to follow its direction with larger swings. Its supposed role as “digital gold” shows up only intermittently in its relationship with gold itself.
BTC: questions
What is the price of Bitcoin today?
BTC was quoted at $83,905 as of 10:53 UTC on 30 September 2026, down 0.11% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.
How volatile is BTC?
Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 2.28% as of 10:53 UTC on 30 September 2026. That is the size of move BTC makes on an ordinary day.
Is today's move in BTC unusual?
Today's move is −0.1σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is an entirely ordinary session. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.
What does BTC move with?
Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with XRP, at a correlation of +0.88. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.
When does BTC move the most?
Over the last 24 hours the London session (07:00–13:00 UTC) carried about 40% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.
