The read
On an ordinary day over the last month of trading, COP has moved about 1.42%, making it a little calmer than most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).
Measured against its own habit, today is a +2.5σ day: the kind it has only a few times a year.
It sits in the upper half of its 24-hour range of 142.81–152.57, measured on hourly closes.
The New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) did most of the work — roughly 82% of the movement over the last 24 hours.
Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with OXY (+0.86, a very strong relationship), and most inversely to NDX (−0.46).
Its last close is at the 98th percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 3rd, near the bottom of its range for the period.
Market read: ConocoPhillips is seeing elevated volume and strong gains, reflecting a broader institutional push into the energy space.

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About ConocoPhillips
Revised 2026-10-07What it is
ConocoPhillips explores for and produces crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids, and does essentially nothing else. Its refining arm was separated into its own listed company in 2012, leaving a pure upstream business. Most production comes from the lower 48 US states, above all the Permian Basin, with further shale output from the Eagle Ford and the Bakken. Beyond that core it is a long-standing producer in Alaska, operates in Canada and Norway, and holds interests in liquefied natural gas projects that sell to international buyers.
What drives it
With no refineries or chemical plants to offset a falling crude price, earnings track commodity prices more directly than an integrated major’s. That makes the cost of each barrel the central competitive question, and what investors are really paying for is inventory: years of drilling locations that stay profitable at modest prices. Shale wells decline steeply after their first year, so output must be replaced continuously, and the capital needed simply to hold production flat is watched as closely as growth. Natural gas matters more than the name suggests, through US prices and the LNG interests. The company has framed its policy as handing back a substantial share of operating cash flow, so buybacks float with the oil price. Long-dated projects, including in Alaska, carry execution and permitting risk outside the shale cycle.
How it trades through the day
Shares trade in the US regular session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC for most of the year and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC from early November to mid-March, when New York runs on standard time. As a cleaner proxy for crude than the majors, it shows intraday swings in West Texas Intermediate more visibly, and on a sharp oil day its percentage move tends to exceed Exxon’s or Chevron’s. Results come before the opening bell, and the production and capital guidance attached to them often matters more than the quarter just ended.
What it tends to move with
It belongs with US shale producers such as EOG Resources and Devon Energy, and with Occidental Petroleum, more than with the majors, and typically swings further than them in both directions. West Texas Intermediate is its closest benchmark, with US gas prices a secondary influence. Its link to the broad equity market is loose, tightening mainly when a growth scare hits oil demand and equities together.
COP: questions
What is the price of ConocoPhillips today?
COP was quoted at $150.80 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, up 3.55% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.
How volatile is COP?
Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 1.42% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move COP makes on an ordinary day.
Is today's move in COP unusual?
Today's move is +2.5σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind it has only a few times a year. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.
What does COP move with?
Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with OXY, at a correlation of +0.86. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.
When does COP move the most?
Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 82% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.
What is ConocoPhillips?
ConocoPhillips is the largest US independent oil and gas producer; with no refining arm, its earnings are a more direct read on crude and gas prices than an integrated major's.
