The read

On an ordinary day over the last month of trading, XOM has moved about 1.09%, making it a little calmer than most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

Measured against its own habit, today is a +2.6σ day: the kind it has only a few times a year.

It sits near the top of its 24-hour range of 178.23–183.35, measured on hourly closes.

The New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) did most of the work — roughly 79% of the movement over the last 24 hours.

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with CVX (+0.87, a very strong relationship), and most inversely to NDX (−0.53).

Its last close is at the 98th percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 0th, near the bottom of its range for the period.

Market read: Exxon Mobil is pushing to its daily highs, mirroring the broader strength seen in major oil producers.

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Exxon Mobil

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Exxon Mobil is an integrated energy company: it finds and produces oil and natural gas, refines crude into fuels and lubricants, and makes petrochemicals, chiefly plastic feedstocks. Upstream is the largest source of profit, concentrated in low-cost areas such as the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico and the offshore fields of Guyana, alongside a large liquefied natural gas portfolio. Downstream it runs one of the biggest refining systems of any listed company. A low-carbon division working on carbon capture, hydrogen and lithium contributes little to earnings so far.

What drives it

Crude is the first input, but integration blurs it. When oil rises, upstream earnings climb while the refineries pay more for their raw material; when it falls, refining and chemical margins can cushion part of the loss, so the shares respond to crude less violently than a pure producer’s. Gas prices, refining margins and chemical margins are the other numbers that set a quarter, and the company has made a practice of filing a note shortly after each quarter ends that sketches how each of them moved its earnings, taking some of the surprise out of the results. Beyond the cycle, investors watch production growth from its lowest-cost assets and the discipline of the capital budget. Exxon has a long, unbroken record of annual dividend increases, topped up with buybacks, so anything that appears to threaten cash returns is received sharply.

How it trades through the day

The shares trade in New York’s regular session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC through the northern summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC after US clocks go back in November. The most regular scheduled catalyst is not the company’s own: the weekly US government report on crude and fuel inventories, published mid-morning New York time on Wednesdays, moves oil and passes through to the share within minutes. Results are released before the opening bell, by which time the earlier filing has usually set expectations for the commodity-driven part of the quarter.

What it tends to move with

Its closest relative is Chevron, and the two are often traded as a pair. It carries the largest weight in the S&P 500 energy sector, so that sector’s moves are substantially its own. Against the broad market it has tended to act as a counterweight, doing relatively well when energy-led inflation weighs on technology valuations.

XOM: questions

What is the price of Exxon Mobil today?

XOM was quoted at $183.21 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, up 2.79% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is XOM?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 1.09% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move XOM makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in XOM unusual?

Today's move is +2.6σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind it has only a few times a year. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does XOM move with?

When does XOM move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 79% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is Exxon Mobil?

Exxon Mobil is the largest of the US integrated oil companies, producing crude and gas, refining fuels and making chemicals, so its earnings rise and fall with commodity prices and margins.
