About Brent Crude Oil

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

Brent began as the name of a single oilfield in the UK North Sea. Today the benchmark is a basket of North Sea grades — Brent, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk and Troll — and, since 2023, US WTI Midland crude delivered into Europe. The most traded contract is ICE Brent futures, quoted in US dollars per barrel in lots of 1,000 barrels. Unlike WTI, it is cash-settled against an index rather than physically delivered, and it serves as the reference for a large share of the world’s internationally traded oil, including much Middle Eastern, African and Russian crude.

What drives it

Because Brent is the seaborne benchmark, it is the more direct gauge of global supply risk. Decisions by OPEC and its partners, conflict in or near producing regions, sanctions on exporters, and threats to shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz or the Red Sea tend to register first in Brent. On the demand side, Chinese imports, European refining, jet fuel consumption and global growth expectations matter most. The shape of the futures curve — whether near-dated barrels trade above later ones (backwardation) or below them (contango) — is widely read as a signal of how tight physical supply is. Shipping costs and freight availability also influence how Brent prices relative to other grades.

How it trades through the day

ICE Brent trades almost continuously from Sunday evening to Friday. The Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) sees steady but light activity, with Asian refiners and Middle Eastern producers pricing off it. The London block (07:00–13:00 UTC) is Brent’s home market, where physical North Sea cargoes are assessed and European traders set much of the day’s tone. Liquidity is highest in the overlap with New York (13:00–22:00 UTC), as US inventory data and WTI flows feed across.

What it tends to move with

Brent tends to move closely with WTI crude, usually trading at a premium. Its link with US natural gas is weak, because Henry Hub gas is priced in a largely separate North American market. Higher Brent prices have tended to coincide with a weaker USD/CAD and to pressure oil-importing currencies, and the FTSE 100, with its large oil producers, has shown some positive sensitivity to it.
