The read

OXY's 20-day volatility stands at 1.71% a day, making it about as volatile as most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

Measured against OXY's own volatility rather than anyone else's, a +1.6σ reading is the kind it has roughly twice a month.

It sits in the upper half of its 24-hour range of 62.64–64.88, measured on hourly closes.

The New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) did most of the work — roughly 73% of the movement over the last 24 hours.

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with COP (+0.86, a very strong relationship), and most inversely to EUR/CAD (−0.43).

Its last close is at the 96th percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 12th.

Market read: Occidental Petroleum is climbing, supported by steady buying pressure throughout the New York session.

  1. Close 62.7 96th percentile: above 96% of its previous 81 readings near its high
  2. 20-day volatility 1.71% 12th percentile: above 12% of its previous 66 readings

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Occidental Petroleum

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Occidental is first an oil and gas producer, and its centre of gravity is the Permian Basin of west Texas and south-east New Mexico, where it is one of the largest operators. It also produces in the Rockies, the deepwater US Gulf, and the Middle East and North Africa, and runs a midstream and marketing business for its output. Its specialism is enhanced oil recovery: for decades it has injected carbon dioxide into mature fields to push out oil that conventional methods leave behind. That expertise underpins a carbon-management business pursuing capture, storage and direct air capture, still small next to the oil operation. Berkshire Hathaway is one of its largest shareholders.

What drives it

Leverage to oil is the defining trait. Occidental’s cost structure and balance sheet make its earnings more sensitive to crude than an integrated major’s, so the shares tend to amplify moves in West Texas Intermediate. Debt is a large part of the reason: big acquisitions over the years were funded substantially with borrowing, and paying it down has competed with buybacks and dividends for cash, so the pace of deleveraging is followed as closely as production. Well productivity and costs in the Permian set the operating picture. The carbon business adds a policy dimension, as its economics depend partly on government incentives. Any change in Berkshire Hathaway’s holding is read by the market as a signal in its own right.

How it trades through the day

There is no meaningful trading in the shares outside New York hours, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC while the US observes daylight saving and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC otherwise. The oil it is leveraged to, however, trades through the Asia and London blocks, so the pre-market indication frequently sets the day’s direction before the regular session begins. Results have typically been released after the US close, with the reaction landing in the following morning’s pre-market.

What it tends to move with

West Texas Intermediate, with greater amplitude than the integrated majors. Among peers it is closest to ConocoPhillips and to Permian-focused producers such as Diamondback Energy. In sharp oil sell-offs it has historically fallen harder than most of the energy sector, a pattern that reflects the debt it has carried as much as the barrels it produces.

OXY: questions

What is the price of Occidental Petroleum today?

OXY was quoted at $64.17 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, up 2.67% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is OXY?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 1.71% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move OXY makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in OXY unusual?

Today's move is +1.6σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind it has roughly twice a month. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does OXY move with?

When does OXY move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 73% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is Occidental Petroleum?

Occidental Petroleum is a US oil producer centred on the Permian Basin, carrying more debt than the majors and a long history of injecting carbon dioxide to recover oil.
