The read

RIOT's 20-day volatility stands at 3.97% a day, making it one of the most volatile of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

Measured against RIOT's own volatility rather than anyone else's, a −0.7σ reading is the kind of session it has most weeks.

It sits near the bottom of its 24-hour range of 12.52–13.22, measured on hourly closes.

The New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) did most of the work — roughly 75% of the movement over the last 24 hours.

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with MARA (+0.88, a very strong relationship), and most inversely to VIX (−0.56).

Its last close is at the 4th percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 2nd, near the bottom of its range for the period.

Market read: Riot Platforms is seeing heavy selling in the New York session, pushing the stock toward its daily lows.

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Riot Platforms

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Riot Platforms, previously Riot Blockchain, is a bitcoin miner that has built its operation around owning very large facilities rather than renting space from hosting companies. Its principal sites are in Texas, where it runs some of the biggest bitcoin mining installations in North America, and it also owns an engineering business that designs and manufactures electrical equipment, used in its own facilities and sold to outside customers. It earns bitcoin by contributing computing power to the network, and has generally retained a sizeable part of what it mines.

What drives it

Power is the defining issue, and Riot’s handling of it is a large part of the story. Its sites draw on the Texas grid, where it has used long-term fixed-price power arrangements and taken part in programmes that pay large consumers to cut demand when the grid is stretched. When power prices spike, typically during a hot Texas summer, it can switch machines off and earn credits or resell power instead of mining, so part of its income can come from energy management rather than bitcoin. Otherwise the familiar arithmetic applies: revenue rises with the coin price and falls as competition for blocks grows, measured by the network’s total hash rate, while the quadrennial halving reduces the subsidy paid for each block. Owning its sites outright gives it more control over costs and expansion, but expansion and new machines need substantial capital, and share issuance has been frequent. Large sites with abundant power capacity have also drawn interest as potential homes for data-centre and high-performance computing workloads, a separate valuation theme.

How it trades through the day

It trades on Nasdaq through the US regular session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter, so the coin’s moves overnight and across weekends reach the share only at the next open. The company has typically published monthly production and operations updates, giving the market interim figures on output, hash rate and power credits between quarterly results. Texas grid conditions during the session, especially summer heat, can be relevant to its economics on the day itself.

What it tends to move with

Bitcoin sets its direction, usually with a bigger percentage move, and MARA Holdings and the other listed miners are its closest peers. Strategy and Coinbase belong to the same crypto-equity complex. When the market is focused on high-performance computing demand, it can also trade with companies converting power-rich sites into data centres, a link that is looser and depends on how much of that theme the market is pricing at the time.

RIOT: questions

What is the price of Riot Platforms today?

RIOT was quoted at $12.53 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, down 2.79% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is RIOT?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 3.97% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move RIOT makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in RIOT unusual?

Today's move is −0.7σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind of session it has most weeks. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does RIOT move with?

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with MARA, at a correlation of +0.88. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.

When does RIOT move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 75% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is Riot Platforms?

Riot Platforms mines bitcoin from large owned sites in Texas, where its power arrangements and grid participation shape the economics almost as much as the coin's price does.
