The read

COST's 20-day volatility stands at 1.09% a day, making it one of the calmer of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

Measured against COST's own volatility rather than anyone else's, a −1.3σ reading is the kind it has roughly once a week.

It sits near the bottom of its 24-hour range of 1,003.32–1,016, measured on hourly closes.

Most of the move came in the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC), which accounted for about 74% of the day's price action.

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with WMT (+0.64, a strong relationship), and most inversely to MARA (−0.48).

Its last close is at the 100th percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 38th.

Market read: Costco is pinned at its daily low, reflecting the broader weakness in consumer staples.

Each figure against its own last 82 sessions

  1. Close 998.31 100th percentile: above 100% of its previous 81 readings near its high
  2. 20-day volatility 1.09% 38th percentile: above 38% of its previous 66 readings

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Costco

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Costco operates large warehouse stores open only to paying members, most of them in the US, with others in Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The model is deliberately constrained: a few thousand product lines rather than the tens of thousands in a supermarket, bought in bulk and sold at markups kept low by policy. Its own Kirkland Signature brand accounts for a large share of sales, and fuel stations, pharmacies and an online business sit alongside the warehouses. Because merchandise is priced close to cost, membership fees, small relative to sales, contribute a large share of operating profit.

What drives it

Membership is the variable the market watches. Renewal rates, which have been very high in the US and Canada, and growth in paid members show whether the fee stream is secure, and fee increases, which come every few years, step profit up. Comparable sales are the running measure of trade, and the company also reports them excluding petrol and currency, since fuel price swings can distort the headline figure. The business is defensive by design, since staples sell in good times and bad. What moves the shares more than any of this is valuation. They have long traded at a multiple of earnings well above other retailers, which leaves them sensitive to any slowdown in sales and to rotation out of high-quality defensive stocks.

How it trades through the day

The share trades in the US cash session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter. Its calendar is unusual for a large company: sales figures are released after the close shortly after each retail month ends, a scheduled datapoint between quarterly results. The fiscal year ends around the start of September and is divided into three twelve-week quarters followed by a sixteen-week one, so quarterly comparisons need reading with that in mind. Day to day it tends to be one of the steadier large shares.

What it tends to move with

Its closest comparisons are Walmart, which runs the competing Sam’s Club chain, and BJ’s Wholesale in the warehouse-club format. It is a Nasdaq 100 constituent, unusual for a retailer, and within that index it behaves as a defensive holding, often holding up when technology shares fall. Its valuation makes it more volatile than a typical staples company.

COST: questions

What is the price of Costco today?

COST was quoted at $1,003.32 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, down 1.46% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is COST?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 1.09% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move COST makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in COST unusual?

Today's move is −1.3σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind it has roughly once a week. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What is Costco?

Costco runs membership warehouse clubs that sell a narrow range of goods at thin markups and earns much of its profit from annual membership fees.
