About MARA Holdings
Revised 2026-10-07What it is
MARA Holdings, formerly Marathon Digital, is one of the largest listed bitcoin miners. It operates fleets of specialised computers that compete to validate blocks of transactions on the bitcoin network, earning newly issued coins and transaction fees for each block it wins. Its capacity is spread across a number of sites, some owned and some run by hosting partners, and it has moved towards owning more of the infrastructure it depends on. Unusually for a miner, it has kept much of the bitcoin it produces rather than selling it to fund operations, and has added to its holdings with coins bought using money raised in the capital markets, building one of the larger corporate bitcoin treasuries.
What drives it
The bitcoin price acts on the business twice. It sets the value of every coin mined, and it revalues the treasury, which under fair-value accounting flows straight into reported profit, so quarterly earnings can say more about where the coin ended the quarter than about how well the mining went. Mining revenue per unit of computing power falls when the network’s total hash rate rises, since a fixed issuance is shared among more competitors, and it drops abruptly at each halving, the scheduled event roughly every four years that cuts the new-coin reward per block in half. Against that, the main cost is electricity, and the efficiency of the machine fleet determines how much revenue survives it, so fleet upgrades are a recurring capital need. Funding has come substantially from convertible notes and share sales, which bring dilution and attract hedging by convertible investors who sell the stock short against their bonds. The company has also been exploring uses for its power and sites beyond mining.
How it trades through the day
The share trades on Nasdaq from 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter, Monday to Friday. Bitcoin never stops, so price moves between sessions and over the weekend accumulate and are applied in a single step at the next opening auction. Network difficulty, which resets roughly every two weeks, can shift mining economics on any day regardless of the trading calendar. Realised volatility normally exceeds bitcoin’s own, reflecting the operating leverage layered on top of the coin exposure.
What it tends to move with
Bitcoin is the dominant relationship, and the share usually moves in the same direction with a larger swing. Among listed peers it trades with Riot Platforms, CleanSpark and the other miners, and with Strategy, whose treasury approach it partly shares. Its connection to the broad equity indices is weak outside periods when risk appetite is driving all speculative assets together.
MARA: questions
What is the price of MARA Holdings today?
MARA was quoted at $7.02 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, down 3.17% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.
How volatile is MARA?
Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 3.36% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move MARA makes on an ordinary day.
Is today's move in MARA unusual?
Today's move is −0.9σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind of session it has most weeks. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.
What does MARA move with?
Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with RIOT, at a correlation of +0.88. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.
When does MARA move the most?
Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 83% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.
What is MARA Holdings?
MARA Holdings mines bitcoin at industrial scale and keeps a large bitcoin treasury, so its shares combine mining economics with direct exposure to the coin's price.
