The read

ZB's 20-day volatility stands at 0.71% a day, making it about as volatile as most of the rates Kinzan tracks (their median is 0.71%).

Measured against ZB's own volatility rather than anyone else's, a −0.8σ reading is the kind of session it has most weeks.

It sits near the bottom of its 24-hour range of 107.0625–107.7813, measured on hourly closes.

The New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) did most of the work — roughly 51% of the movement over the last 24 hours.

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with ZN (+0.92, a very strong relationship), and most inversely to US30Y (−0.98).

Its last close is at the 34th percentile of its own last 83 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 100th, near the top of its range for the period.

Market read: 30-Year T-Bond futures are breaking down, with the New York session accelerating the sell-off.

Against its own record

Each figure against its own last 83 sessions

  1. Close 107.75 34th percentile: above 34% of its previous 82 readings
  2. 20-day volatility 0.71% 100th percentile: above 100% of its previous 67 readings near its high
  3. Distance from 20-day average +3.66% 100th percentile: above 100% of its previous 63 readings near its high

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About 30-Year T-Bond Futures

Revised 2026-10-05

What it is

An exchange-traded contract referencing long-dated United States Treasury bonds, listed quarterly with volume concentrated in the nearest contract. It quotes a price, so it moves inversely to the thirty-year yield. Its defining characteristic is duration: a bond with decades left to run changes in value far more for a given shift in yield than a shorter one does, which is why an identical move in basis points produces a much larger percentage move in this contract than in the ten-year equivalent.

The eligible delivery basket for this contract has a defined maturity range, and a separate ultra contract exists for the very longest bonds. They are distinct instruments with different sensitivities and should not be read interchangeably.

What drives it

It responds to the long end of the curve, so the dominant inputs are term premium, long-run inflation credibility and the government’s issuance plans at long maturities, rather than the next policy decision. Pension and insurance hedging is a persistent structural flow: these institutions buy duration to match liabilities that extend as far out as the bond does, and regulatory or funding changes that alter their appetite move this contract directly.

Convexity is a technical feature with practical consequences. The price response to falling yields is larger than the response to rising ones, which means hedgers who are short this exposure must buy more as the market rallies, and that mechanical demand can extend a move beyond what the underlying news justifies.

How it trades through the day

It trades nearly continuously on the electronic exchange with a short daily pause. Liquidity is thinner than in the ten-year contract, so the bid-offer is wider and large orders have more effect. Long-end auctions and the quarterly refunding announcements are scheduled events that move it more than they move anything shorter.

What it tends to move with

Inversely to the thirty-year yield, and in the same direction as the ten-year note contract but with greater amplitude. The ratio between the two is itself a traded view on the shape of the curve, so periods where they diverge in magnitude carry more information than either move alone.

ZB: questions

What is the price of 30-Year T-Bond Futures today?

ZB was quoted at 107.125 as of 21:58 UTC on 23 October 2026, down 0.58% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is ZB?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 0.71% as of 21:58 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move ZB makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in ZB unusual?

Today's move is −0.8σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind of session it has most weeks. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does ZB move with?

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with ZN, at a correlation of +0.92. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.

When does ZB move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 51% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is 30-Year T-Bond Futures?

The front-month thirty-year Treasury bond futures contract, the longest-duration instrument on this board and the one with the largest price response to a given yield move.
