The read
Over its last 20 sessions NIKKEI has moved 1.28% on a typical day, making it one of the most volatile of the indices Kinzan tracks (their median is 0.75%).
That makes the last 24 hours a +1.5σ session for NIKKEI — the kind it has roughly once a week.
It sits near the top of its 24-hour range of 66,194.3–66,864.15, measured on hourly closes.
Most of the move came in the Asia session (22:00–07:00 UTC), which accounted for about 100% of the day's price action.

About Nikkei 225
Revised 2026-09-30What it is
Published by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper group since 1950, the Nikkei 225 is Japan’s best-known stock market gauge. Like the Dow Jones, it is price-weighted, so companies with high share prices carry outsized influence; a few names — the owner of the Uniqlo brand being the most famous example — can move the index far more than their economic size would suggest. That quirk is one reason many institutions prefer the broader, market-cap-weighted TOPIX as a benchmark, though the Nikkei remains the headline figure.
What drives it
Japan’s large exporters — carmakers, electronics, machinery and semiconductor-equipment makers — give the index a strong currency sensitivity. A weaker yen raises the value of overseas earnings in yen terms and has historically lifted the Nikkei; a sharp yen rally has often weighed on it. Bank of Japan policy therefore acts through two channels at once: interest rates and the currency. Corporate governance reforms, pressure on companies to improve returns and increase buybacks, and foreign investor flows have been major structural themes. Global chip demand matters because of the index’s weight in technology suppliers, and the BoJ’s past purchases of equity ETFs made it an unusually large holder of Japanese stocks.
How it trades through the day
The Tokyo cash market trades in two parts, with a lunch break, roughly 00:00 to 06:30 UTC — squarely inside the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC). Nikkei futures trade in Osaka with a long night session, as well as in Singapore and Chicago, so the index’s direction continues to be priced through the London block (07:00–13:00 UTC) and the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC), when moves in US equities and USD/JPY are absorbed ahead of the next Tokyo open.
What it tends to move with
The Nikkei 225 has historically moved in the same direction as USD/JPY, since yen weakness tends to help its exporters. It tends to follow the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500 overnight, particularly through technology names, and it often moves with the Hang Seng on regional sentiment, though Japanese and Chinese markets frequently diverge.
