The read

CAT's 20-day volatility stands at 2.11% a day, making it livelier than most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

Measured against CAT's own volatility rather than anyone else's, a −1.1σ reading is the kind it has roughly once a week.

It sits near the bottom of its 24-hour range of 684.28–710.5, measured on hourly closes.

The New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) did most of the work — roughly 65% of the movement over the last 24 hours.

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with TSM (+0.70, a strong relationship), and most inversely to WTI (−0.45).

Its last close is at the 5th percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 47th.

Market read: Caterpillar is sliding, pinned near its daily low following a weak New York session.

Against its own record

Each figure against its own last 82 sessions

  1. Close 740.21 5th percentile: above 5% of its previous 81 readings near its low
  2. 20-day volatility 2.11% 47th percentile: above 47% of its previous 66 readings

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Caterpillar

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Caterpillar is the largest maker of construction and mining equipment, selling excavators, loaders, bulldozers, haul trucks and the parts and services that keep them running. Its third major division, Energy and Transportation, builds reciprocating engines, industrial gas turbines and locomotives used for power generation, oil and gas compression and rail. A financial-services arm lends to customers and dealers to fund purchases. The company sells almost entirely through independent dealers, which own the customer relationship in their territories, giving it a distribution reach competitors find hard to copy and a parts and service stream that is steadier than new-machine sales.

What drives it

Machinery demand follows construction activity, mining investment and infrastructure spending, so the shares are effectively a position on the global capital cycle. Mining equipment orders tend to follow commodity prices with a lag, as miners commit to new capacity only once prices have held up. Construction depends on interest rates, housing and public works budgets in North America, and on property and infrastructure investment in China and other developing markets. Dealer inventory adds a complication: dealers build or run down stock, so Caterpillar’s sales to dealers can diverge for several quarters from what end users are actually buying, and management’s commentary on that gap is watched closely. Pricing is the other lever, since the company has shown it can raise prices ahead of steel and labour costs when markets are tight. In Energy and Transportation, demand for engines and turbines for on-site power generation, including at data centres, has opened a source of growth tied to a different cycle from bulldozers.

How it trades through the day

The share is listed in New York and trades in the regular session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC during US summer time and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter. Quarterly results arrive before the open and are treated as a macroeconomic release as much as a company one, because few other businesses report on so many end markets and regions at once. Moves in Asian industrial shares and in copper overnight, and Chinese economic data published during the Asia block, can set the tone for its open.

What it tends to move with

Deere is the closest US comparison, though farm demand gives it a different cycle; Komatsu, trading in Tokyo during the Asia block, is the direct competitor. It responds to copper and iron ore through the mining channel and to bond yields through construction. It is a constituent of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and among the cyclical names that tend to lead that index when economic optimism is rising.

CAT: questions

What is the price of Caterpillar today?

CAT was quoted at $687.00 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, down 2.42% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is CAT?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 2.11% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move CAT makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in CAT unusual?

Today's move is −1.1σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind it has roughly once a week. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What is Caterpillar?

Caterpillar makes construction and mining machinery, engines and turbines, and sells through a worldwide dealer network, which makes its shares a running read on the global industrial cycle.
