About AST SpaceMobile
Revised 2026-10-07What it is
AST SpaceMobile is building a constellation of large satellites in low earth orbit, designed to provide cellular broadband directly to standard, unmodified mobile phones and fill gaps where ground networks do not reach. Each satellite carries an unusually large antenna array, which is how the company aims to reach handsets without any specialised hardware on the user’s side. Its business model is wholesale: rather than selling to consumers, it partners with established mobile network operators, who contribute their spectrum and customer relationships and share the resulting revenue. The company is in the build-out stage. Its revenue is small compared with the capital it needs, and its value rests mainly on service that is still to come.
What drives it
Deployment is the dominant variable. Continuous commercial service requires a sizeable number of satellites in orbit, so each satellite built, each launch secured and each launch flown changes the assumed date when meaningful revenue can begin. The company relies on other companies’ rockets to reach orbit, which makes launch availability, and delays elsewhere in the industry, its problem too. Regulatory permission to use operators’ spectrum from space is needed market by market. Funding is the other axis: building and launching satellites is expensive, so share sales and convertible debt recur, and dilution is a constant consideration for holders. Competition matters as well, particularly from SpaceX, whose own direct-to-phone service also works through partner operators and offers an obvious comparison. Short interest has at times been high, which can amplify rallies when sentiment turns.
How it trades through the day
The shares trade on Nasdaq in the US regular session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter. Volume is high relative to the company’s revenue, with a large retail following and active options trading, and daily moves that would be exceptional for an established company are routine here. Launches, regulatory decisions and announcements from partner operators can arrive at any hour, and news that lands outside the session is traded first in the thinner pre-market and post-market sessions before the regular open sets a fuller price.
What it tends to move with
It trades as part of the listed space cohort with Rocket Lab and Intuitive Machines, and SpaceX’s shares provide a benchmark for the satellite-communications theme in particular. Its link to the telecoms carriers’ own shares is slight despite the partnerships, and it behaves more like a high-beta growth stock, sensitive to risk appetite and to the cost of capital.
ASTS: questions
What is the price of AST SpaceMobile today?
ASTS was quoted at $39.79 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, up 2.63% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.
How volatile is ASTS?
Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 5.09% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move ASTS makes on an ordinary day.
Is today's move in ASTS unusual?
Today's move is +0.5σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind of session it has most weeks. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.
What does ASTS move with?

When does ASTS move the most?
Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 82% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.
What is AST SpaceMobile?
AST SpaceMobile is building a satellite network designed to connect directly to ordinary mobile phones, working through mobile network operators rather than selling to consumers itself.
