The read

On an ordinary day over the last month of trading, WMT has moved about 1.54%, making it a little calmer than most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

Measured against its own habit, today is a −0.7σ day: the kind of session it has most weeks.

It sits in the lower half of its 24-hour range of 119.27–121.62, measured on hourly closes.

The move was spread across the day rather than concentrated in one session; London contributed the largest share, about 38%.

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with COST (+0.64, a strong relationship), and most inversely to MARA (−0.42).

Its last close is at the 95th percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 52nd.

Market read: Walmart is pinned at its daily low, signaling a clear lack of buyer interest today.

Against its own record

Each figure against its own last 82 sessions

  1. Close 117.8 95th percentile: above 95% of its previous 81 readings near its high
  2. 20-day volatility 1.54% 52nd percentile: above 52% of its previous 66 readings
  3. Distance from 20-day average +6.20% 92nd percentile: above 92% of its previous 62 readings near its high

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Walmart

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Walmart operates discount stores and supercentres across the US, where groceries account for more than half of sales, alongside general merchandise from clothing to electronics. Sam’s Club, its membership warehouse chain, competes directly with Costco. The international division runs operations in markets including Mexico, Canada, China and India, where it controls the e-commerce company Flipkart. Scale in purchasing and distribution lets it promise everyday low prices rather than relying on promotions. It has turned its stores into distribution points for online orders and built higher-margin businesses on top: advertising sold to suppliers and brands, and a paid membership offering free delivery. The founding family retains a large holding.

What drives it

The US consumer is the backdrop, but Walmart’s relationship with it is unusual: when household budgets tighten, higher-income shoppers trade down to it, which can lift its sales while other retailers suffer. Grocery prices feed directly into revenue and into how much else customers can afford. The market has increasingly valued Walmart less as a store operator and more as a platform, so growth and profitability in online sales, together with advertising and membership income, have become central to how results are read. Costs matter in a low-margin business: wages for a very large workforce, freight, and the price of imported goods, which makes tariffs a direct concern.

How it trades through the day

It trades in the US cash session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC during the summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter. Like many retailers it reports before the open, in mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November, because its fiscal year ends in January; the results therefore play out at the opening auction and through the session rather than after hours. They land in the same weeks as other big retailers’ results, when the market forms its view of the American consumer. Realised volatility is low, and a move of a few per cent on results is significant for it.

What it tends to move with

Its natural peers are Costco and Target, and it trades alongside consumer staples more than with discretionary retailers. It is one of the thirty members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. In broad sell-offs it has tended to fall less than the market, and its moves frequently run opposite to high-growth technology shares when investors rotate into defensive holdings.
