About Hang Seng

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

The Hang Seng Index, compiled since 1969, is the main benchmark for the Hong Kong stock exchange. It is a free-float-adjusted, market-capitalisation-weighted index with caps on individual constituents’ weights. Over the past two decades its composition has shifted from Hong Kong property developers, utilities and banks towards mainland Chinese companies, which now make up much of the index, including large internet platforms, state-linked banks, insurers and consumer firms. For many international investors it is the most accessible way to see how Chinese equities are being valued.

What drives it

China’s economic policy is the central force. Stimulus measures, property-sector support, regulatory crackdowns or relaxations on technology firms, and decisions by the People’s Bank of China have all produced large swings. Chinese data — industrial production, retail sales, credit growth — feed in, as does the health of the mainland property market. Hong Kong’s currency is pegged to the US dollar within a narrow band, so local interest rates tend to follow US rates; tighter US policy can therefore weigh on Hong Kong property and banks even when conditions in China are different. US–China relations, including tariffs, export controls and audit disputes over US-listed Chinese companies, add a geopolitical risk premium. Flows from mainland investors through the Stock Connect programmes have become an important source of demand.

How it trades through the day

Hong Kong’s cash session runs from about 01:30 to 08:00 UTC with a midday break, placing it mostly within the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) and just into the London block (07:00–13:00 UTC). Hang Seng futures have an after-hours session extending into the European evening, allowing reaction to European and early US news. During the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC), US-listed Chinese stocks and index futures offer a read on the next day’s likely opening.

What it tends to move with

The Hang Seng tends to move with Chinese-sensitive assets such as copper and AUD/USD, and has historically been affected by moves in US yields through the currency peg. Its relationship with the S&P 500 and the Nikkei 225 is positive but weaker than that among Western indices, as Chinese policy often sets its own path.
