About US Dollar / Swiss Franc

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

USD/CHF measures the number of Swiss francs one US dollar buys; the pair is often called the “swissie”. Switzerland is small, but its currency punches far above the country’s economic weight because of the nation’s long record of political neutrality, low inflation, large current-account surpluses and deep financial sector. A higher reading means a stronger dollar and a softer franc.

What drives it

The franc’s reputation as a refuge is the dominant theme. During geopolitical crises or market panics, money has historically flowed into Swiss assets, pushing USD/CHF lower even when US fundamentals are unchanged. That creates a problem for Swiss exporters, and the Swiss National Bank has a long history of leaning against franc strength — through negative interest rates in the past, through direct currency purchases, and at one point through a floor under EUR/CHF that it abandoned abruptly in 2015, producing one of the most violent single-day moves in modern currency history. SNB policy meetings are held quarterly, so each carries weight. On the US side, the usual drivers apply: Federal Reserve expectations, Treasury yields and data.

How it trades through the day

Asia (22:00–07:00 UTC) is typically quiet for the franc. Zurich’s trading day overlaps the London block (07:00–13:00 UTC), when Swiss data and SNB announcements are released, and when the pair takes much of its lead from moves in the euro. New York (13:00–22:00 UTC) brings US data and, during stressed markets, the bulk of any haven-driven flows as US investors react.

What it tends to move with

USD/CHF has historically moved as a near mirror image of EUR/USD, since the Swiss economy is tightly bound to the euro area. It tends to rise with the US Dollar Index. In risk-off episodes the franc has often strengthened alongside gold and the Japanese yen, so USD/CHF has tended to fall at the same time as USD/JPY and as the VIX climbs, although the SNB’s presence can mute those moves.
