About New Zealand Dollar / US Dollar

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

NZD/USD states what one New Zealand dollar is worth in US dollars. Market slang calls the currency the “kiwi”. New Zealand is a small, open economy whose exports lean heavily on agriculture — dairy above all, followed by meat, timber and tourism — and its currency is correspondingly sensitive to the prices those goods fetch abroad. It is the smallest of the seven USD majors by turnover, so liquidity is thinner than in EUR/USD or USD/JPY.

What drives it

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has historically been one of the more willing central banks to move early, both in tightening and easing cycles, and its decisions and projected rate path are primary drivers. The kiwi was, for long stretches, a high-yielding currency and a popular carry-trade destination, which makes it sensitive to shifts in global risk appetite. Global Dairy Trade auctions, held twice a month, give a regular read on the country’s main export prices. China, as a major buyer of New Zealand produce, matters here too, though less directly than it does for Australia.

How it trades through the day

New Zealand is the first developed market to open each week, so the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) begins with Wellington. RBNZ announcements and local data generally land between about 21:45 and 02:00 UTC depending on the season, making the early Asian hours the pair’s most event-heavy window. During London (07:00–13:00 UTC) the kiwi often drifts with broader dollar moves, and New York (13:00–22:00 UTC) supplies the US data. Thin liquidity around the weekly open can produce gaps.

What it tends to move with

NZD/USD tends to move closely with AUD/USD — the two are among the most correlated majors — while tending to move against the US Dollar Index. It has historically strengthened when equity markets rally and weakened during sell-offs, and it shares some sensitivity to Chinese growth with copper, though that tie is weaker than Australia’s.
