The read

Over its last 20 sessions CVX has moved 1.19% on a typical day, making it a little calmer than most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

That makes the last 24 hours a +2.4σ session for CVX — the kind it has only a few times a quarter.

It sits near the top of its 24-hour range of 226.68–233.42, measured on hourly closes.

Most of the move came in the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC), which accounted for about 77% of the day's price action.

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with XOM (+0.87, a very strong relationship), and most inversely to NDX (−0.50).

Its last close is at the 100th percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 8th, near the bottom of its range for the period.

Market read: Chevron is hitting a daily high, showing consistent strength as the energy sector continues to outperform.

Against its own record

Each figure against its own last 82 sessions

  1. Close 226.78 100th percentile: above 100% of its previous 81 readings near its high
  2. 20-day volatility 1.19% 8th percentile: above 8% of its previous 66 readings near its low
  3. Distance from 20-day average +6.53% 95th percentile: above 95% of its previous 62 readings near its high

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Chevron

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Chevron produces oil and gas, refines crude and sells fuels under its own and the Texaco brands, with most of its petrochemical activity run through a joint venture. At home the Permian Basin is the main growth engine. Abroad, among the largest contributors are a stake in the giant Tengiz oilfield in Kazakhstan and liquefied natural gas projects off north-western Australia that supply buyers across Asia. It also has deepwater production in the US Gulf and a gas position in the eastern Mediterranean, so its earnings answer to a wider set of prices, governments and transport routes than a producer focused on one country.

What drives it

The oil price sets the direction, but Chevron’s exposure runs through particular channels. Much of the Australian gas is sold under long-term contracts linked to crude, so oil reaches its gas revenue too, with a delay. Tengiz crude gets to world markets through a pipeline across Russia to the Black Sea, which has made disruption on that route a company-specific risk with nothing to do with global supply and demand. Refining margins add or subtract depending on the season and on industry outages. Capital allocation is a recurring argument about how much cash goes into new production rather than dividends and buybacks, with the buyback pace commonly adjusted as oil moves. Multi-year expansions at very large fields have a long industry history of overrunning, and a delay at one big asset is material to the group.

How it trades through the day

Regular trading takes place in New York, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in the northern summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter. OPEC+ decisions on output have often been taken at weekend meetings, so a Monday open can carry an adjustment for news the share had no session in which to absorb. Chevron and Exxon Mobil have frequently published quarterly results on the same morning before the US open, which turns that day into a single event for the integrated group rather than two.

What it tends to move with

Exxon Mobil above all, with gaps between them usually explained by project or portfolio news rather than a different view of oil. Brent matters most for its international barrels and West Texas Intermediate for its Permian output, and in practice it follows both. It is the principal energy constituent of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
