The read
SLB's 20-day volatility stands at 1.81% a day, making it about as volatile as most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).
Measured against SLB's own volatility rather than anyone else's, a +3.9σ reading is a session well outside its usual range.
It sits near the top of its 24-hour range of 49.2–53.32, measured on hourly closes.
Most of the move came in the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC), which accounted for about 75% of the day's price action.
Over the last 60 sessions SLB has had no strong day-to-day relationship with anything else Kinzan tracks — its closest link is CVX at +0.40.
Its last close is at the 53rd percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 20th.
Market read: SLB is rallying hard, pinned near its daily highs as energy sector strength continues to dominate the session.

About SLB
Revised 2026-10-07What it is
SLB does not produce oil; it is paid by those who do. It is the largest oilfield services company, supplying the technology, equipment and skilled crews that producers need to map reservoirs, drill and complete wells, and keep them flowing. Its work runs from seismic and downhole measurement, through drilling services, to production equipment and subsea systems, plus a software and data business sold to the same customers. It renamed itself from Schlumberger in 2022. Most revenue comes from outside North America, with large exposure to the Middle East, Latin America and offshore basins, and state-owned producers are among its most important clients.
What drives it
Revenue depends on how much producers spend, not on what oil fetches on a given day, and the two are linked with a delay. Budgets are typically set annually and respond to sustained price levels, so a brief rally or slump in crude barely registers while a change in the medium-term outlook does. Offshore developments and national oil company programmes in the Gulf states are planned over years and are less price-sensitive than US shale drilling, which can be turned up or down within months. Pricing power is the second lever: services margins widen sharply when rigs and crews are scarce across the industry and compress when they are not. The digital business provides a steadier stream underneath, while working in a great many countries at once brings operational and political risk.
How it trades through the day
The New York regular session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter, carries effectively all the volume. SLB has typically reported early in each results season, before the US open and ahead of the other large services companies, so its outlook arrives as the first word on producer spending for the quarter and is read across the whole group. Day to day it reacts less to crude headlines than the producers do.
What it tends to move with
Its natural peers are Halliburton, more concentrated on North American shale, and Baker Hughes, which leans further towards gas and equipment. It moves with the energy sector over a horizon of months but often lags the oil price itself, since activity follows budgets. Rig counts and the spending intentions of the large Middle Eastern producers are the indicators most associated with its direction.
SLB: questions
What is the price of SLB today?
SLB was quoted at $53.06 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, up 7.08% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.
How volatile is SLB?
Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 1.81% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move SLB makes on an ordinary day.
Is today's move in SLB unusual?
Today's move is +3.9σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is a session well outside its usual range. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.
What does SLB move with?
Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with CVX, at a correlation of +0.40. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.
When does SLB move the most?
Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 75% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.
