About Ethereum

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

Ethereum, launched in 2015, is a programmable blockchain: rather than only recording transfers, it runs smart contracts, self-executing programs that underpin decentralised finance, stablecoins, token issuance and NFTs. Ether (ETH) is its native currency, used to pay the “gas” fees for computation on the network. ETH-USD is the price of one ether in US dollars. In 2022 the network moved from proof-of-work mining to proof-of-stake, in an upgrade known as “the Merge”, so it is now secured by holders who lock up ether as collateral and earn rewards.

What drives it

Unlike bitcoin, ether has no hard supply cap. Its supply changes with the balance between staking rewards and a mechanism that burns part of every transaction fee; heavy network use can make net issuance fall. Demand therefore links partly to activity on Ethereum and on the “layer 2” networks that settle to it — trading volumes on decentralised exchanges, stablecoin transfers and lending. Staking yield gives ether a return that some investors compare with a bond coupon, although it comes with protocol and price risk. Beyond network fundamentals, ether is highly sensitive to the broader crypto cycle, regulatory treatment in the United States and elsewhere, and competition from rival smart-contract chains.

How it trades through the day

Ether trades continuously, 24/7, across hundreds of venues. Like the rest of crypto, it still has rhythm: Asian exchange activity during the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC), a pick-up as Europe arrives in the London block (07:00–13:00 UTC), and typically the highest volume in the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC), when US institutional desks and exchange-traded products are active. Network upgrades are scheduled events that can concentrate volatility around a specific date.

What it tends to move with

ETH-USD tends to move with bitcoin, usually with larger percentage swings in both directions. It has historically been closely linked to Solana and other smart-contract tokens, and to technology equities such as the Nasdaq 100 during periods when crypto trades as a risk asset.

ETH: questions

What is the price of Ethereum today?

ETH was quoted at $2,694 as of 10:53 UTC on 30 September 2026, down 0.72% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is ETH?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 2.45% as of 10:53 UTC on 30 September 2026. That is the size of move ETH makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in ETH unusual?

Today's move is −0.3σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is an entirely ordinary session. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does ETH move with?

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with BTC, at a correlation of +0.87. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.

When does ETH move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 51% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is Ethereum?

Ether is the native asset of Ethereum, the largest smart-contract blockchain, shown here priced in US dollars.
