Against its own record

Each figure against its own last 82 sessions

  1. Close 226.59 3rd percentile: above 3% of its previous 81 readings near its low
  2. 20-day volatility 4.06% 18th percentile: above 18% of its previous 66 readings
  3. Distance from 20-day average −16.41% 10th percentile: above 10% of its previous 62 readings near its low

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Arm Holdings

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Arm is a British company, based in Cambridge, that designs processor architectures and the cores built on them but manufactures nothing. Its instruction set runs in nearly all smartphones and a growing share of servers, PCs and cars. Licensees pay an upfront fee for access to an architecture or a specific design, then a royalty on every chip shipped that contains it, so a design signed today can earn for many years. Newer architecture versions and pre-integrated compute subsystems carry higher royalty rates than older ones, which lets revenue grow faster than unit volumes. SoftBank Group owns the large majority of the shares, and the Nasdaq listing, dating from 2023, takes the form of American depositary shares.

What drives it

Royalty-rate expansion is the core of the growth story: moving customers onto newer architectures and subsystems raises the take per chip even in a flat handset market. The second driver is share gain beyond phones. Cloud operators designing their own server processors have largely chosen Arm, and progress in Windows PCs and in-vehicle computing widens the base the royalty is charged on. China is a particular exposure, since much of the business there runs through a separately controlled local entity. The valuation is high relative to revenue, which makes the shares sensitive to any cooling in growth expectations, and the small free float left by the parent’s dominant holding can magnify moves in both directions.

How it trades through the day

Although the company is British, its only listing is on Nasdaq, so price discovery happens in the US cash session: 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer, 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter. Its parent trades in Tokyo during the Asia block, and moves there are sometimes read across before New York opens. The fiscal year ends in March, and results are released after the close. Realised volatility sits well above the semiconductor average.

What it tends to move with

It trades as a high-multiple member of the semiconductor complex and tends to amplify the group’s direction. The most direct links are with the chip designers among its largest licensees, Qualcomm and Apple included, and with the smartphone cycle. News about SoftBank, including how it funds its own investments, has at times moved Arm too.
