Semiconductors are the highest-beta corner of the US market and the group whose members move together most tightly. The reason is shared exposure: almost every name here depends on the same small set of customers building data centres, the same handful of foundries to manufacture, and the same advanced packaging and memory capacity that has repeatedly been the binding constraint on how much can be shipped. The industry has always been cyclical, running through periods of shortage and glut as customers over-order into strength and then work inventory down. What changed recently is the size of the demand concentrated in artificial-intelligence infrastructure, which made a handful of buyers' capital-expenditure plans the single most important input for the whole group. Two things cut across it. Export controls on sales into China have redrawn the addressable market for several of these companies at short notice. And the split between merchant suppliers and the firms helping large customers design their own silicon means members of this group are increasingly competing for the same budget from opposite directions.
