  2. 20-day volatility 2.48% 26th percentile: above 26% of its previous 66 readings

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Qualcomm

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Qualcomm has two businesses that report separately and earn very different margins. The chip division sells Snapdragon system-on-chip processors, which combine the application processor, graphics and cellular modem in one part, to phone makers, and also sells chips for cars, PCs and connected devices. The licensing division owns a large portfolio of patents essential to successive generations of cellular standards and charges handset makers a royalty based on the device’s selling price, whether or not the phone contains a Qualcomm chip. Licensing is a small share of revenue but a disproportionate share of profit. The company is fabless.

What drives it

The premium Android handset cycle is the core input, and China is the swing factor within it: several of the largest Android brands are Chinese, and their volumes, and their choice between Qualcomm and in-house or regional alternatives, show up directly. Apple has been a large modem customer and has been designing its own modem to replace Qualcomm’s, so that transition is a known headwind written into guidance. Diversification is the longer-term question. PC processors built on the Arm architecture, automotive platforms and data-centre ambitions are meant to reduce dependence on a mature phone market, and evidence that they are scaling has tended to be rewarded. Licensing carries its own event risk: agreements expire and are renegotiated, and disputes with large licensees, and with Arm, have gone to court before.

How it trades through the day

The New York block holds nearly all of its liquidity: 13:30 to 20:00 UTC through the northern summer, 14:30 to 21:00 UTC after the clocks change. The fiscal year runs to late September, and results come after the close. Between reports, two sources of news routinely move it: the autumn launch season, when the industry’s flagship phone processors are unveiled and design wins become visible, and figures from Asian handset makers and suppliers, which arrive before New York opens.

What it tends to move with

It belongs to the semiconductor group but behaves more like the smartphone supply chain than like the AI hardware names, so it has often lagged when accelerators lead. Its nearest comparisons are Apple, as both customer and future competitor in modems; MediaTek in Taiwan, the main rival in Android processors; and Arm, whose instruction set its processors are built on.

QCOM: questions

What is the price of Qualcomm today?

QCOM was quoted at $175.91 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, up 1.78% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is QCOM?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 2.48% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move QCOM makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in QCOM unusual?

Today's move is +0.7σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind of session it has most weeks. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does QCOM move with?

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with ARM, at a correlation of +0.64. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.

When does QCOM move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 96% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is Qualcomm?

Qualcomm designs the processors and modems inside a large share of the world's Android phones and collects royalties on its cellular patents from most handset makers.
