Interest rates are the defining input, and they cut in two directions at once. Higher rates widen the margin a bank earns between what it pays for deposits and what it charges for loans, which is good. They also raise the odds that borrowers cannot pay, which is not, and credit losses arrive later than margin gains, so the market spends much of a tightening cycle arguing about which effect will dominate. The shape of the curve matters as much as the level, because lending long while funding short is the business. The card networks grouped here are a different animal and are frequently misread as banks. They take no credit risk on the transactions they process, earning a fee on payment volume instead, which makes them closer to toll roads on consumer spending than to lenders. They tend to hold up when credit conditions deteriorate. Capital return is a recurring event for the banks, since buyback and dividend capacity follows from regulatory stress testing rather than from earnings alone.
