A cross strips the dollar out of the comparison, which makes it the cleanest way to see how two other currencies are faring against each other. EUR/GBP isolates the relative fortunes of the euro area and the United Kingdom; AUD/JPY sets a growth-sensitive currency against a traditional haven and is widely watched as a gauge of risk appetite. Most crosses are priced from the two dollar legs behind them, so a cross's move is the difference between two dollar pairs. That is why a cross can be quiet on a day when both of its currencies moved sharply against the dollar in the same direction. The yen crosses — EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, AUD/JPY and their relatives — are typically the most volatile of the group, because they combine a higher-yielding currency with the yen's tendency to strengthen when markets turn defensive. The European crosses are usually the calmest.
