About Euro / British Pound

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

EUR/GBP shows how many pounds one euro buys. It is the main European cross and, compared with most pairs, a slow mover: the two economies are neighbours with deep trade and financial ties and often face similar shocks, so much of what moves one also moves the other. That tends to leave EUR/GBP with narrower daily ranges than either EUR/USD or GBP/USD. It is quoted to five decimals.

What drives it

Because common influences cancel out, what remains is the relative story. The pair responds to the difference between European Central Bank and Bank of England policy, to relative inflation and growth surprises, and to anything that affects one side of the Channel but not the other. UK-specific political risk has historically been the largest source of volatility — during the Brexit process the cross swung more than it had in years. Trade arrangements between the UK and EU, fiscal decisions in London and political strains inside the euro area can each shift it. Because the dollar is absent, US data usually has only a small direct effect.

How it trades through the day

The Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) is typically very quiet, with thin liquidity. Nearly all meaningful price discovery happens during the London block (07:00–13:00 UTC), when UK and euro-area data and both central banks’ communications are released. After the European afternoon, activity in the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC) declines, and the pair often moves only as a by-product of flows in the two dollar pairs.

What it tends to move with

Arithmetically, EUR/GBP equals EUR/USD divided by GBP/USD, so it rises when the euro outperforms the pound against the dollar. It has shown a loose tendency to rise when UK assets are under pressure, including weakness in the FTSE 100 relative to the DAX 40, though that link is inconsistent. It is usually less sensitive to the US Dollar Index than any other pair on the board.
