Against its own record

Each figure against its own last 85 sessions

  1. Close 17,943 68th percentile: above 68% of its previous 84 readings
  2. 20-day volatility 0.71% 75th percentile: above 75% of its previous 69 readings
  3. Distance from 20-day average +0.14% 62nd percentile: above 62% of its previous 65 readings

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About US Dollar / Indonesian Rupiah

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

USD/IDR is the rupiah price of one US dollar; a higher rate means a weaker rupiah. Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, runs a managed float. Bank Indonesia targets inflation and intervenes regularly, describing a “triple intervention” approach that operates in the spot market, the domestic non-deliverable forward market and the government bond market at once. International investors without onshore access use offshore non-deliverable forwards, settled in dollars.

What drives it

Indonesia exports large volumes of commodities — coal, palm oil and nickel among them — so global prices for these goods have a clear bearing on the trade balance and the rupiah. The government’s policy of processing nickel at home rather than exporting raw ore has made metals and battery supply chains more important to the outlook.

Portfolio flows are the more volatile channel. Foreign investors have long held a meaningful share of Indonesian government bonds, and when US yields rise or global risk appetite fades, outflows can hit the currency hard. The rupiah suffered heavily in the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis and again during the 2013 “taper tantrum”, when it was grouped among the “Fragile Five” currencies seen as dependent on foreign capital. Its sensitivity to the Federal Reserve’s path, US yields and the strength of the dollar remains high. Domestic factors — fiscal discipline, perceptions of the central bank’s independence and policy continuity after elections — also shape the risk premium investors demand.

How it trades through the day

Jakarta’s market hours fall within the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC), when Bank Indonesia is active, Indonesian data is released and onshore liquidity is concentrated. Through the London block (07:00–13:00 UTC) and the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC), the rate is shaped mostly by offshore forwards and by US Treasury yields, which often set the tone for the next Jakarta open.

What it tends to move with

USD/IDR has historically moved in the same direction as US Treasury yields, such as the US 10-year yield, and the US Dollar Index, and alongside other Asian dollar pairs including USD/INR and USD/PHP. Strength in commodity prices, coal and nickel in particular, has tended to support the rupiah and pull the pair lower.
