The read

NVO's 20-day volatility stands at 1.25% a day, making it a little calmer than most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns, it has moved most closely with ABBV (+0.42, a moderate relationship), and most inversely to KOSPI (−0.60).

Its last close is at the 22nd percentile of its own last 82 sessions, and its 20-day volatility at the 0th, near the bottom of its range for the period.

Against its own record

Each figure against its own last 82 sessions

  1. Close 39.06 22nd percentile: above 22% of its previous 81 readings
  2. 20-day volatility 1.25% 0th percentile: above 0% of its previous 66 readings near its low

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Novo Nordisk

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Novo Nordisk is a Danish pharmaceutical company built around diabetes, a franchise that began with insulin about a century ago. Its modern business rests on GLP-1 medicines, a class that mimics a gut hormone to regulate blood sugar and appetite, sold under separate brands for type 2 diabetes and for weight management. A smaller division covers rare diseases such as haemophilia. The primary listing is in Copenhagen. NVO is an American depositary receipt: a dollar-denominated certificate issued by a depositary bank against shares held in custody, which lets US investors own the company without dealing in Denmark. Voting control sits with a foundation-owned holding company through a class of unlisted shares.

What drives it

The obesity market is effectively a two-company contest with Eli Lilly, so clinical readouts on either side reprice both, and a single trial result for a next-generation compound has at times moved the shares more than a set of quarterly figures. US pricing is the second axis: what insurers, pharmacy-benefit managers and government programmes will pay matters more than unit volumes. Manufacturing capacity has been a real constraint, since injectable pens need specialised filling lines that take years to build. Patent expiries in individual countries open the door to cheaper copies of the core molecule, which is why the pipeline beyond it is watched so closely. Currency adds a layer of its own: the company reports in Danish kroner while much of its revenue is earned in dollars.

How it trades through the day

Price discovery happens first in Copenhagen, which trades through the London block, roughly 07:00 to 15:00 UTC in summer and an hour later in winter. The receipt follows in New York’s regular session, 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter, so the two lines overlap for about an hour and a half, with arbitrage keeping them aligned once the exchange rate is applied. After Copenhagen closes, the US line carries the price alone. Company announcements have tended to arrive on the Danish timetable, so the receipt often opens already repriced and its daily move is largely an echo of the primary market.

What it tends to move with

Eli Lilly is the closest relationship, though not always in the same direction: a setback for one can read as a gain in share for the other. Beyond that it belongs with the large European drugmakers and dominates the Danish equity index. For a dollar holder, the krone, held closely to the euro, adds a currency layer the Copenhagen line does not carry.
