The read

On an ordinary day over the last month of trading, JNJ has moved about 1.82%, making it about as volatile as most of the stocks Kinzan tracks (their median is 1.81%).

Measured against its own habit, today is a −0.8σ day: the kind of session it has most weeks.

It sits in the lower half of its 24-hour range of 262.75–268, measured on hourly closes.

The move was spread across the day rather than concentrated in one session; London contributed the largest share, about 42%.

  2. 20-day volatility 1.82% 92nd percentile: above 92% of its previous 66 readings near its high

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Johnson & Johnson

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

For most of its history Johnson & Johnson was known for household products, but those consumer brands were separated into a new listed company, Kenvue, in 2023. What remains has two segments. Innovative Medicine develops and sells prescription drugs in immunology, oncology including blood cancers, neuroscience, and cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. MedTech makes orthopaedic implants, surgical instruments, devices used to treat heart-rhythm disorders, and contact lenses and other eye-care products. Pharmaceuticals provide the larger share of sales. The company is one of very few to hold the highest available credit rating, and it has raised its dividend every year for more than six decades, which shapes who owns it.

What drives it

The central task in the drug business is replacement. Medicines lose exclusivity on a schedule fixed years in advance, and when a large biologic faces cheaper copies, known as biosimilars, its sales can decline steeply within a few years. Investors therefore judge the company on whether newer oncology and immunology products, alongside acquisitions, are growing fast enough to fill each gap as it opens. Medicare price negotiation adds pressure on older products. In devices the drivers are different: hospital procedure volumes, pricing pressure from bulk purchasing schemes in China and elsewhere, and the pace at which new surgical and cardiac technologies win share. The third factor is litigation. Tens of thousands of claims allege that its talc-based powder caused cancer, and repeated attempts to resolve them through a subsidiary’s bankruptcy have been rejected by the courts, so rulings in that matter can move the shares on any day.

How it trades through the day

Results arrive before the US open, usually among the first from large healthcare groups each season, so its commentary is read across the sector. Full-year guidance is given in January. The cash session runs 13:30 to 20:00 UTC in summer and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in winter, and realised volatility is low outside results and court rulings.

What it tends to move with

It trades with the large drugmakers, Merck, Pfizer, AbbVie and Bristol Myers Squibb, and on the device side with Medtronic, Abbott, Stryker and Boston Scientific. It behaves defensively, tending to hold up when the index falls and lag when growth shares lead. It is a Dow Jones Industrial Average constituent.
