  2. 20-day volatility 1.85% 55th percentile: above 55% of its previous 66 readings

A percentile is the share of the earlier sessions in the window below today's figure (an equal one counts half), so a new high for the period is the 100th. The window is about four months: high for the season, not for the year, and never a fair value or a forecast.

About Merck

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

There are two Mercks, and they are unrelated businesses. This one is the American company based in New Jersey, which trades as MSD outside the United States and Canada; the German Merck KGaA of Darmstadt is a separate listed group. The American company’s largest franchise is oncology, led by Keytruda, an immunotherapy that helps the body’s immune system attack tumours and has been approved across a long list of cancer types. It also has a substantial vaccines business covering human papillomavirus, childhood immunisations and pneumococcal disease, along with hospital and cardiovascular medicines, and an animal-health division that sells treatments for livestock and pets.

What drives it

Concentration is the defining issue. A large share of revenue comes from a single cancer medicine whose key US patent protection expires later this decade, and the market’s view of the shares is largely a view of what happens afterwards. Three things feed that view: how much of the franchise can be retained through new formulations and combinations, how quickly the pipeline produces replacements, and what the company buys. Acquisitions are therefore read as strategic events, judged on price as much as on science. Vaccine sales have proved volatile in particular markets, for reasons that have little to do with the product. US drug-price negotiation under Medicare caps what older medicines can earn. Animal health, which is far less exposed to patent expiries, gives a steadier base underneath.

How it trades through the day

Results come before the US open. Clinical data is a larger source of movement than in most large drugmakers, and much of it is presented at oncology congresses such as the ASCO meeting in late spring and the European ESMO meeting in the autumn, with abstracts sometimes released before the presentations. The cash session runs 13:30 to 20:00 UTC from March to early November and 14:30 to 21:00 UTC in the remaining months. It is a Dow Jones Industrial Average constituent.

What it tends to move with

Bristol Myers Squibb, which sells a competing immunotherapy, is its most direct comparison in oncology, and AstraZeneca and Roche give an earlier read during European hours. It trades with Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and the healthcare sector more broadly, and shares the sector’s defensive character on days when the index falls.

MRK: questions

What is the price of Merck today?

MRK was quoted at $145.27 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, down 1.34% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is MRK?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 1.85% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move MRK makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in MRK unusual?

Today's move is −0.7σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind of session it has most weeks. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does MRK move with?

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with PFE, at a correlation of +0.65. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.

When does MRK move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the London session (07:00–13:00 UTC) carried about 68% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is Merck?

Merck & Co., known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, is a drugmaker whose earnings rest heavily on one of the world's best-selling cancer medicines, alongside vaccines and an animal-health business.
