About Copper

Revised 2026-09-30

What it is

Copper conducts electricity and heat better than any other affordable metal, which puts it in power cables, motors, plumbing, air-conditioning and almost every electronic device. Its sensitivity to construction and manufacturing earned it the nickname “Dr. Copper” — a metal with a doctorate in economics. The contract followed here is the front COMEX copper future, quoted in US dollars per pound, not per tonne. The London Metal Exchange, the other major venue, prices in dollars per tonne, so the two quotes are not directly comparable without conversion.

What drives it

China consumes roughly half of the world’s refined copper, so its property construction, grid investment and manufacturing output are the single largest influence on demand. Global industrial production, US housing and infrastructure spending add to that picture. The energy transition has become a long-term theme, because electric vehicles, wind turbines, solar farms and grid upgrades are all copper-intensive. Supply is concentrated in Chile and Peru, with the Democratic Republic of Congo increasingly important, and strikes, water shortages, political changes and falling ore grades at large mines can all tighten the market. Visible inventories held at exchange warehouses in London, New York and Shanghai are watched as a gauge of tightness, and trade tariffs have at times opened unusual gaps between the COMEX and LME prices.

How it trades through the day

The Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) is significant because Shanghai Futures Exchange trading and Chinese data releases often set early direction. The London block (07:00–13:00 UTC) overlaps with LME activity, where much global price discovery happens. COMEX volume peaks in the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC), especially around US data.

What it tends to move with

Copper has historically moved with global equity markets and with commodity currencies, particularly AUD/USD. It tends to rise with the Hang Seng on signs of Chinese stimulus and to fall when the US Dollar Index strengthens. Its link to crude oil is loose and mostly reflects the shared business cycle.
