About Oats

Revised 2026-10-07

What it is

Oats are a cool-climate cereal grown for porridge and breakfast cereals, for animal feed, horses especially, and increasingly for oat drinks. The Chicago Board of Trade contract is a long-standing one, quoted in US cents per bushel with 5,000 bushels per contract. It is also among the smallest in the grain complex: open interest and daily volume are a fraction of those in corn or wheat, so a single large order or a burst of short covering can move the price further than the underlying news would justify.

What drives it

Production has moved north over the decades. US oat acreage shrank as farmers switched to more profitable corn and soybeans, and the United States now relies heavily on imports, mostly from Canada. The Prairie provinces, Saskatchewan above all, have become the key growing region for the North American market, so Canadian weather sits at the centre of price formation, along with Statistics Canada’s acreage and production estimates and the cost and availability of rail freight south across the border. Oats are spring-sown in North America and harvested in late summer, and the crop copes poorly with heat and drought, which leaves it exposed to the dry summers that periodically hit the Prairies. The Nordic countries, Russia and Australia are other notable producers. Food use, which has grown with interest in oat-based products, gives demand a steadier base than feed alone would.

How it trades through the day

Oats keep the CBOT grain timetable, with an overnight electronic session spanning parts of the Asia block (22:00–07:00 UTC) and London block (07:00–13:00 UTC), and a day session in the New York block (13:00–22:00 UTC). In practice, nearly all meaningful trading happens in the US day session. Overnight, the order book is often thin enough that the price can sit unchanged for long stretches and then jump between trades.

What it tends to move with

Oats tend to follow corn and wheat over longer periods, since all three compete in feed rations, but day to day the thin market lets them drift on their own. The Canadian dollar, seen here in USD/CAD, can matter for the cost of imported supply, and canola is a rival for Prairie acres when farmers decide what to plant.

OATS: questions

What is the price of Oats today?

OATS was quoted at $371.50 as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026, down 1.26% over the previous 24 hours. Prices on Kinzan update every five minutes and may be delayed.

How volatile is OATS?

Its 20-day volatility — the standard deviation of its last 20 daily returns — is 1.79% as of 21:53 UTC on 23 October 2026. That is the size of move OATS makes on an ordinary day.

Is today's move in OATS unusual?

Today's move is −0.7σ — the 24-hour change divided by its own 20-day volatility. That is the kind of session it has most weeks. Readings beyond ±2σ are uncommon for any instrument.

What does OATS move with?

Over the last 60 sessions of daily returns its closest relationship has been with WHEAT, at a correlation of +0.53. Correlations change over time and do not imply that one instrument causes the other to move.

When does OATS move the most?

Over the last 24 hours the New York session (13:00–22:00 UTC) carried about 80% of its movement. Kinzan splits the day into three contiguous UTC blocks — Asia, London and New York — so every hour is counted exactly once.

What is Oats?

Oats are a small, long-established grain market, traded here as the CBOT oats futures contract priced in US cents per bushel.
