Canada Employment Change

Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey interviews members of roughly fifty thousand households each month about their work in the reference week. From it come the employment change, the unemployment rate, participation and a breakdown of hours, wages, full- and part-time work and the private and public sectors. Unlike the United States, Canada publishes jobs and unemployment from the same household-based source, so there is no second, business-side count released at the same time.

The survey often lands on the same Friday morning as US payrolls, and at precisely the same minute. The loonie can therefore be pushed around by two labour reports simultaneously, and moves in USD/CAD sometimes reflect the relative surprise between them. Taken alone, a strong Canadian print has historically tended to support the Canadian dollar and push up yields on Government of Canada bonds as markets reconsider the Bank of Canada's path.

Month-to-month changes are noisy because the sample is modest relative to the population. Statistics Canada publishes standard errors, and a movement of several tens of thousands of jobs can fall within them. Part-time work swings more than full-time and can flatter or mute the headline. Population estimates, adjusted periodically as immigration shifts, can revise historical levels. Wage growth for permanent employees is widely followed as a signal of domestic inflation pressure.
