A layer-1 token is the native currency of its own blockchain, used to pay transaction fees and, on proof-of-stake networks, to secure the chain through staking. This group includes Solana, Cardano, Avalanche, Polkadot, NEAR, Aptos and several others, along with the leading layer-2 scaling networks built on top of Ethereum. These tokens tend to move with Bitcoin and Ether on broad market days, but with a larger amplitude, and they are more prone to moves driven by their own network news — upgrades, outages, token unlocks and changes in on-chain activity. Their histories are shorter and their liquidity thinner than the major coins, so their 20-day volatility is usually higher and can shift quickly. A reading that is unusual for Bitcoin may be routine for a smaller layer-1 token, which is exactly the difference the surprise measure is built to show.
