About US Initial Jobless Claims
Every Thursday the Department of Labor reports how many people filed a first claim for unemployment insurance in the week ending the previous Saturday. The numbers come from state programmes, which administer benefits, and are aggregated and seasonally adjusted at the national level. The release also carries continuing claims, the count of people still drawing benefits, which runs a week behind.
Its frequency is its strength. While payrolls arrive once a month and with a lag, claims give a near-real-time view of layoffs, and a steady upward drift has historically preceded rises in the unemployment rate. Markets tend to react when a figure breaks decisively from its recent range, but a single week rarely changes much on its own. Many readers prefer the four-week moving average to smooth out noise. The claims week that includes the twelfth of the month is watched a little more closely because it lines up with the payrolls survey period.
Seasonal adjustment is the series' persistent headache. Holidays, school breaks, annual auto-plant retoolings and the timing of Easter all produce swings that the factors do not fully capture, and storms can temporarily close offices or trigger bursts of filings in affected states. Occasional fraud waves have also distorted state totals. The prior week is revised in each release, and seasonal factors are recalculated every spring.
Continuing claims have become a useful proxy for how easily laid-off workers find new jobs. Challenger job-cut announcements and the JOLTS layoffs measure add context.
